Adult Acne Treatment

When we reached adulthood we thought we would never have to deal with acne again. Boy how wrong we were! Even those adults who never had problems with acne as a teenager inexplicably suffer from adult acne. Unfortunately, it is women who suffer the most with adult acne. This is due to many factors that include:

• Hormones:Due to fluctuations in hormones when a woman is ovulating, menstruating, pregnant, or entering menopause women will experience acne eruptions.
• Cosmetics:When applying cosmetics, a woman is blocking skin pores from letting out the oils and baceteria in the skin. Avoid the use of oil based products on the face, including oily cleansers, certain skin treatments, and hair care products.

Even though adult acne occurs more in women, men are afflicted too. Due to testosterone levels, men may experience acne that is continuous from their teen years to their late twenties. Sometimes, whether you are a man or a woman, outbreaks occur due to the following:

• The medications that you are taking may cause your body to release more oils, dirt, and bacteria than normal.
• Genetics - If your family has a history of acne, then it's likely that you will suffer as well. This is especially true if your family's skin type tends to be oily.
• Stress levels over stimulate the oil production glands. The higher your stress level is, the more prone to acne that you become.
• Constantly Touching The Face - The fact that we can't seem to keep our hands away from our faces is a major contributing factor to adult acne. Our hands, no matter our best intentions, are dirty. We transfer tons of dirt, bacteria, and oils to our face every time we touch our face.

How Does Adult Acne Form?

Adult acne typically starts out as a blackhead. These are not trapped dirt; they are a buildup of oil and dead skin cells that are stuck in a pore. At the point where they are exposed to the air they turn black. If they become irritated, they will become red and become infected, filling with puss. This is the point that we usually discover them and we tend to want to pick at or squeeze them. Do not do this! The pore is already stretched and breaking open the pustule causes scarring.

So how do we prevent the pustule from forming?

The answer is by gently cleansing the face with non-abrasive cleansers. However, most facial cleansers inside your local store, don't attack adult acne at the source of the problem. So, just because you are experiencing adult acne it does not mean that it is the end of the world. If you take proper care of your skin and use the right kind of acne treatment, you can reduce the number of outbreaks that you have. As a result, you can keep that “youthful” glow for a long time.
